I Hate This Sea

48”x60”

Oil, mixing mediums and gloss on canvas.

I began “I Hate This Sea” with wanting to work on painting water in a dark and luminous way. I hadn’t really worked on water yet and I wanted to push the boundaries but create my own idea as to how it would work and how I wanted to portray the subject. I started much lighter, but it became darker and darker the more I worked on it.

I was taking a class with an experienced abstract painter as my professor. She did not agree with my style of painting and how I was progressing with my work. I work on an intuitive way of painting- processual and conceptual, which she did not seem to grasp. I do feel like she changed my way of thinking for this piece and negatively impacted the outcome. However, as time goes on, I do find this piece more and more beautiful.
